This is arguably the single most important document in the history of the Library Theatre (and, subsequently, the Stephen Joseph Theatre).
It is Stephen Joseph's first letter to the Director of Scarborough Library, William Smettem, enquiring about the use of the Concert Room (Stephen mistakenly refers to it as the Harrison Room) as a potential venue for his theatre-in-the-round project.
It marks the start of Stephen Joseph’s connection with Scarborough and, specifically, Scarborough Library. Williams Smettem's favourable response ensured Stephen would set up the theatre in the venue.
This document is held in the Stephen Joseph Theatre Collection at Scarborough Library. The website is grateful to Scarborough Library and its staff for their help and support.
